About the Artist

The credit Lith. F. Appel points to the lithographic printer associated with Folies-Bergère Minting, rather than securely identifying the illustrator. Here, the Appel name is attached to an advertisement for one particular Paris attraction: the cycling performer Minting at the Folies-Bergère. The venue opened on rue Richer in 1869 and presented entertainment beyond conventional theatre. By 1890, an act promising extraordinary balance could command its own vintage poster. This Belle Époque theatre art print preserves that connection between a printing establishment and a stage where physical daring gave audiences a reason to return.

The Artwork

Every evening brought another opportunity to test belief against a live performance. Tous les Soirs, meaning every evening, makes the invitation explicit, while Minting names the attraction audiences were being asked to see. The suspense lies in a simple question: can a performer complete such a precarious ascent? Rather than tell a fictional story, this Paris theatre advertising poster sells the prospect of witnessing an actual feat. Its purpose was practical, bringing spectators to the Folies-Bergère. Viewed today as a vintage print, it also records how prominently a specialist cycling act could be promoted.

Style & Characteristics

A pale spiral sweeps upward from the arena floor, narrowing around a slender central pole. Two depictions of a rider mark different heights along the track, each balanced on a single wheel. Dark undersides make the turns appear steeper against the yellow ground. Below, spectators gather behind a railing beside palms, while a fountain rises at the left. A Union Jack flies near the summit. Across this vertical poster, enormous Folies-Bergère lettering arches above the track; the slanted Minting name occupies the open right side. The lithographic texture remains visible in this fine art print.

In Interior Design

Imagine a high-ceilinged sitting room where this vintage cycling art print hangs above a low walnut cabinet. A narrow black frame echoes the dark lettering without competing with the spiral. From a leather armchair opposite, the full ascent can be followed from the broad lower curve to the flag overhead. Leave enough bare wall around the image for that height to register. As wall art, the theatre advertisement gives the room a specific Parisian reference; its yellow ground can guide the home decor toward warmer tones without turning the interior decoration into a period reconstruction.
