About the Artist

The raised glass turns a vermouth advertisement into a performance, a transformation central to Leonetto Cappiello and his approach to advertising. Born in Livorno, he moved to Paris in 1898 and contributed caricatures to publications including Le Rire before building his reputation through posters. His 1903 Chocolat Klaus advertisement famously used a green horse to make the brand recognizable. Here, the Italian vermouth advertisement carries that preference for spectacle into a commission for Contratto. A fine art print of this 1922 Cappiello poster preserves the theatrical gesture that makes the drink seem larger than everyday life.

The Artwork

An aperitif becomes an occasion worth announcing. Contratto was founded by Giuseppe Contratto in Canelli in 1867 and established its reputation through sparkling wine; this advertisement instead promotes vermouth. The names Vermouth Victor and Vermouth Bianco bring two products together under the Contratto brand. As an aromatized wine associated with the aperitif, vermouth suggests the social interval before a meal. Canelli gives that invitation a geographical anchor in Piedmont, a region closely associated with wine production. Today, this vintage poster for Italian vermouth records how a commercial message could turn a familiar drink into a promise of celebration.

Style & Characteristics

A small amber glass rises above the woman against enormous green leaves. Her red hair curls outward on either side of her face, and a red scarf crosses the neckline of her ivory dress. The fabric bunches around a lifted knee before falling toward a bare leg and pointed foot. Two bottles hang from her lowered hand, their detailed labels much smaller than the foliage behind her. Deep blue surrounds the figure, while orange product names occupy opposing corners. In this vertical vintage print, the eye follows the raised arm downward to the yellow CONTRATTO lettering and CANELLI beneath it.

In Interior Design

Imagine this Contratto Canelli art print above a walnut drinks cabinet in a dining room, where late afternoon light grazes the wood and a small glass waits on a tray. A narrow black frame echoes the contours around the figure, while the blue background deepens the contrast against warm plaster. The raised glass connects this advertising wall art to the act of welcoming guests before dinner. For home decor centered on hospitality, the vermouth bottles supply a specific subject rather than an unrelated ornament. That connection gives the interior decoration a reason to gather around the cabinet.
