About the Artist

A mountain holiday begins before departure. In this 1950 railway poster, Roger Aujame turns the Pyrenees into an invitation from the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français, whose name appears beneath the destination. SNCF had united much of the French rail network in 1938, giving postwar tourism a recognizable national messenger. Aujame focuses not on locomotives but on the landscape awaiting passengers. That choice defines his contribution to railway advertising: the journey is implied, while mountain air becomes the reason to travel. As a vintage poster and fine art print, it preserves SNCF destination marketing.

The Artwork

The name Pyrenees functions here as both destination and promise. Running along the border between France and Spain, the mountain range had long drawn visitors seeking highland retreats. Pyrenees Railway addresses that desire by presenting the holiday as the reward for boarding an SNCF train. In 1950, France was rebuilding after the Second World War, and renewed mobility gave leisure travel fresh significance. Rather than explain routes or schedules, the vintage tourism poster asks viewers to imagine arrival. Its purpose was practical railway advertising, yet its narrative remains emotional: ordinary city life gives way to a mountain holiday.

Style & Characteristics

Snowcapped peaks rise beneath streaked blue-grey clouds, while darker ridges step forward toward the wooded valley. A pale chalet occupies the middle distance, isolated by an open green meadow. In the foreground, a rose-dressed woman rests one hand on a slender yellow trunk as a white goat looks upward beside her. Rippling black water and broad leaves anchor the lower edge. Aujame leads the gaze from the large italic PYRÉNÉES lettering into layered bands of vegetation, then up to the bright summit. Painterly marks give this vertical poster a mid-century modern graphic style, while heightened green and yellow suggest strong sunlight.

In Interior Design

Place this vertical poster above a low oak sideboard in a quiet living room, where afternoon light can echo the pale mountain sky. A narrow black frame repeats the dark foreground without competing with the cream SNCF panel. On the sideboard, a single stoneware lamp could mirror the warm grey of the chalet. The green valley can guide one moss-coloured textile elsewhere in the room, while the surrounding wall remains open around the peaks. Used as wall art, this fine art print introduces the anticipation of rail travel into home decor without turning the space into a travel theme.
